Reflections on the Kerner Commission Report

Originally recorded March 1, 2018 on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago following a panel discussion organized by UIC's Great Cities Institute on the 50th anniversary of the release of the Kerner Commission Report, which sought to address many of the disparities in black communities that led to the unrest of the summer of 1967 in many U.S. cities. Please check out the interview here.

“Don’t worry about the type of world you’re living in today.  Worry about what happens if you do nothing about it and the type of world you leave for the future of tomorrow.  That’s what we should be concerning ourselves with.  Not the work we’re doing today but the type of future that we’ll have tomorrow for the work we’re not doing.  And that’s not the work of making it 9-5 to pay some bills, I’m talking about the social and cultural work that needs to happen to build a better future for this country and our people.” - Willie JR Fleming
